Transformative learning is a theory of learning that particularly focuses on adult education and young adult learning involving the questioning of one’s prior beliefs and worldview, and the assumption that learners can adjust their thinking based on new information through the process of critical reflection and critical review. This is especially pertinent in the context of higher education whereby faculty and instructors are often not able to distinguish between andragogy, the teaching and learning method used to engage adult learners as opposed to pedagogy, which focusses on how children learn. Often this results in students not being able to effectively engage in the learning process. Therefore, current and aspiring educators can greatly benefit from understanding Mezirow’s Transformative Learning Theory and applying it in their classrooms to create rich experiences for students and to ensure deep and meaningful learning.
The aim of this webinar is to introduce participants to Mezirow’s transformative learning framework and the key concepts within, followed by the practical application of these conceptions to create classrooms where adult and young adult learners can thrive.
By the end of the webinar, participants should be able to
- understand the principles underpinning transformative learning
- unpack component of transformative learning phases
- identify the benefits of transformative learning
- effectively apply transformative learning framework to instruction
